"I can distinctly remember the awe and utter amazement I felt watching my first cesarean delivery. I decided to pursue a career in obstetrics after observing a delivery during my first week of obstetrics training in medical school. I moved to the Chapel Hill area after many years of living and practicing in Rhode Island because of the outstanding group of physicians here. I became interested in pelvic floor disorders because of the emphasis on improving the quality of life. For most pelvic floor disorders – bladder, bowel, sexual dysfunction, or vaginal bulge – there are usually multiple treatment options with different pros and cons. Because each woman is different, I tend to teach each patient about her own pelvic floor issues, and then we collaborate to develop a treatment plan that incorporates her specific goals. I am actively involved in research because I think that is the way that we will develop better treatment options for women.
